Since the mid-1990s during the rollout of roadside electronics cabinets for the cable television industry the UM1000 stainless steel lift-off hinge has been the first choice for manufacturers across the United Kingdom and Europe.

Outdoor electronics enclosures endure a great deal of punishment in their lifetime. The hardware used to secure their contents must withstand extreme weather conditions and occasional extended abuse from attack. The UM1000 lift-off hinge for FTTC cabinets, 5G and telecoms outdoor enclosures has stood the test of time due to its reliable durability, ease of accurate fitting and vandal resistant features throughout.

The outer part of the hinge is manufactured from solid cast 304 stainless steel including 4 bosses on the back of each hinge that passes through the panel from the outside. These are then secured by two 4mm thick backing plates manufactured from pressed stainless steel held in place by four stainless steel cap screws.

The only departures from the original 1990s design are two material changes making the hinge even stronger than it was previously. The backing plates were originally manufactured using cast stainless steel, the decision to move to pressed stainless steel was made when abuse testing showed a higher resistance. The same applies to the hinge pin which is necessary to allow the lift-off mechanism. This was originally cast with the lower part of the hinge. Manufacturing the pin as a separate, pressed stainless steel element simplified the manufacturing process, with the additional benefit of providing a much stronger hinge.

In addition to material changes, there has been a significant change in some outdoor enclosure manufacture. A move towards a thinner gauge material throughout the cabinet creates an issue for the through panel bosses on the UM1000 hinge which require a tight, precision fit. This is rectified with the use of an additional precision cut 1mm thick gasket which creates the tight seal required.

Barely changed from its original design the UM1000 lift-off hinge remains the most popular choice for outdoor enclosure manufacturers and is specified on 100’s of designs throughout the UK and Europe.
